About Dr. Gloria…

Dr. Gloria Mitchell is a licensed psychologist who provides a multidisciplinary approach to her work. She encourages her clients’ awareness and understanding of how their biological, psychological, cognitive, social, and cultural histories influence their current levels of functioning.·

Essential to Dr. Mitchell’s practice is a focus on the client’s active, intentional participation in the process of therapy; participation that continues at home, at work, and in every important relationship. She believes that by developing the ability to say clearly what we want, feel and mean, and to hear clearly what others want, feel, and mean, we can improve or restore the important relationships in our lives.

Development and Lasting Change Through Active Participation and Responsible Communication

• Therapy (Individual, Couples)

• Communication Sessions (Individual, Couples, Family)

• Parent Sessions

Dr. Mitchell views each client as unique and works to understand their individual needs and goals. Services begin with an initial consultation. This is an opportunity for each client to tell their story and for the doctor to listen, understand their history, their reasons for seeking help, and their present conflicts. Identifying the changes each client wishes to make  serves as the springboard for moving forward.

Therapy (Individual, Couples) In therapy, history is explored to develop insight and a present understanding of how past experiences and old attitudes create conflict and interfere with mental health. Dr. Mitchell brings her decades of training and experience to the process as clients develop the courage to tolerate anxiety and discomfort as they move towards making meaningful changes.

Communication Sessions (Individual, Couple, Family) Good communication develops compassion and respect, and enriches relationships. It requires the ability to speak, to listen, and to acknowledge what others have said, while maintaining an awareness of the feelings of all involved. In communication sessions, Dr. Mitchell presents models and shares techniques with which clients practice. They are encouraged to pay attention to how messages are sent, acknowledged and received, leading to improvement in every important relationship at home, at work, and in the world.

Parent Sessions (Individual or Parents) A parent’s own childhood experiences may interfere with their relationship with their children.  Not having a personalized and detailed understanding of what to expect at each step in a child’s development may also be problematic. Dr. Mitchell’s lifetime interest in children, her PhD in developmental psychology, and her years of running Close Kid Encounters, and working as a child and family therapist, underlie her ability to help parents learn to see and hear the feelings underlying a child’s behavior, develop strategies to get closer to their children, and make the most of what can be a challenging part of life.
